  • Other Information:The élevage for this wine was very simple: we harvested half of the fruit from the vineyard about a week after our first pick. We then whole cluster fermented the grapes for 18 days. The juice and skins fermented together without the addition of SO2. The wine then aged in neutral barrels for three years with no topping or SO2 additions. Four barrels were produced. In 1969, Rudy Rodriguez planted the Herron Vineyard on a small parcel a few hundred feet above Sonoma Valley. Harry Crete, the owner of the property, originally sold his fruit to Mike and Mary Benzinger throughout the 1970s and 1980s. In 1989, Phyllis Herron purchased the property from Harry Crete and continued growing grapes. Today, Phyllis’ son, Wynne Herron, lives on the property and takes care of this beautiful slice of Sonoma Valley. Rudy's nephew nephew Servando helps us farm the vineyard by hand. Planted on Saint George rootstock, this 1.5 acre vineyard is small enough to farm with our own hands.

About Maître de Chai

California, United States

Maître de Chai translates to cellar master, or the person responsible for the development and aging of wine. By extension, the humble cellar master is the person responsible for the management of the winery.

Established in 2012, Maître de Chai is the personal project of Marty Winters and Alex Pitts. Together we look to make wines of high quality in a way that best showcases the sense of place where the grapes are grown and the personality of the vineyard. From the ground to the bottle, the character of the wine is the focus of our endeavor. We source grapes from unique and distinct single vineyards that are impeccably farmed here in California.

As our name implies, we care for the wines in the cellar. We defer to nature, limiting our intervention. We taste and we wait, allowing the wines to develop and speak for the places in which they are rooted.
