COQUELICOT (ko-klee-ko) is the name “en Francais” of the striking red poppy flower that graces the French countryside, as well as all the labels on our wines. Our 58 acre vineyard is an organically farmed property in the heart of the Santa Ynez Valley. Sustainable farming and gentle, meticulous winemaking techniques converge to produce hand made, limited production wines that are a true celebration of life. To explain the history of Coquelicot Estate and Rose & Son is to venture back in time a bit, to tell an immigrant’s tale; one of struggle and perseverance alike. The Rosenson family, all recent survivors of World War II who had relocated to Paris, were given the opportunity to immigrate to the United States on the infamous passenger cruise ship/wartime transporter, the Queen Mary. With precious few possessions of note, they settled in Kings County, NY, aka Brooklyn, and quickly picked up right where the family business had left off: hospitality. The Rosensons came from a long line of premier European bakers and Bernard, the oldest of the children, had no intention of letting the war stop the legacy. He embraced the pioneer spirit set forth by his parents and moved out West to California, establishing a noteworthy hospitality and healthcare group under which the Rose & Son brand was later developed alongside his son and Sommelier, Jonathan. The bottle and blend you’re holding is a tangible homage to the passion and tenacity of the Rosenson lineage as well as a toast to the realization of a nothing-to-something ‘American Dream’, from the Queen to Kings.
