Additional Information

The Wheeler Vineyard Chardonnay was planted in 1977 on a gravelly alluvial terrace of the Wheeler Ranch, located a stones' throw from the town of Tres Pinos in San Benito County. Tiny clusters and low yields are both hallmarks of this historic old vine vineyard. The resulting wine is a beautifully textured Chardonnay, with the balanced acidity you'd expect from this cool climate site. The grapes were whole cluster pressed and fermented with it’s native yeasts. The wine aged in neutral oak barrels for eleven months. Three puncheons and fifteen barrels were produced.

By extension, the humble cellar master is the person responsible for the management of the winery. Established in 2012, Maître de Chai is the personal project of Marty Winters and Alex Pitts. As our name implies, we care for the wines in the cellar. We defer to nature, limiting our intervention. We taste and we wait, allowing the wines to develop and speak for the places in which they are rooted.
