Since 1994 La Pievuccia has been producing organic wine and oil (ABCERT certified). La Pievuccia was recently purchased by Vista Castello Fattoria e Vigneti s.r.l.a and has taken over the current inventory and operations of the farm. From 2004 the care of our orchard, vineyards and olive groves introducing and following the principles of biodynamic or natural agriculture – as it is sometimes also called. No fertilizers at all but permaculture in the vineyards and olive groves is used instead; this involves the use of extracts from herbs, citrus fruit and natural parasites so as to prevent and contrast fungal diseases as well as to reduce the use of copper and sulphur. Selection of grapes and harvest is carried out strictly by hand. This happens in the field. Vista Castello / La Pievuccia is situated in Castiglion Fiorentino, Tuscany. Tuscany is where the Sangiovese grape produces its very best fruits. Through generations of practice, we have realised that our vineyard is fantastic for the Sangiovese grape but it is also ideal for white grapes like the Chardonnay or the Incrocio Manzoni. Like the Vernaccia in other areas of Tuscany, we are here producing distinctive and fruitful white wines that exalt our terroir. We have vineyards more than 40 years old and are characterized by deep roots which explore the subsoil and enrich with its minerals. The red wines vineyards are on the hills while the white ones are located half way down. Our wines are sapid and tasty. The natural concept of terroir is exalted simply by leaving nature do its own course: the seasons, the rain, the wind and the sun give the wines we produce the taste of our hills. These natural aspects are different every year, but yet they give the same distinctive mark of this wonderful terroir. We own 5 hectares of vineyard with an annual, total production of about 30.000 bottles. We belong to the “network of independent winemakers” and this, among other aspects, implies the choice of not buying grapes and wine from suppliers but working with the produce we can obtain here every year. Nothing is forced in the cellar, no enzymes, yeasts or tannins, acidifying or other wine additives therefore we rely on spontaneous fermentation from local yeasts. We add to some wines a minimal quantity of sulfites (in a bottle the proportion is always under 50mg/lt of the total amount). In some wines there is no addition of sulfites at all. Wines are Vegan. We use very light bottles, reducing weight and carbon footprint for ethical reasons, sugar cane corks, which are a 100% biodegradable and have a very low carbon footprint, labels made with recycled pomace paper. 12 kw Photovoltaic panels on the farm produce 100% renewable energy for our production. Vista Castello / La Pievuccia’s wines are easy to drink, they are immediate, simple and yet very satisfying. We do not think they are meditation wines but rather to be enjoyed during a meal as they enrich the taste of different food. Our credo is that they are functional wines that can bring out the best characteristics of each meal. These matchings can be done directly in the kitchen, in an innovative way, while cutting fresh vegetables from the orchard or appreciating the fragrance of the wholemeal bread. There are no luminaries or “professors of taste” for our wines, there are only good wine lovers. The white Rima or the Rosato for an afternoon snack or, as we like to say now, for an aperitif. The white and red are the perfect match for everyday lunch and dinner, particularly the Nottelunga can be the highlight of a special occasion such as a dinner party with many or just a few…
