"Introducing ""ERBE: A Legacy in Each Bottle""

The essence of our wine is captured in the single word 'Erbe', the German term for heritage. It symbolizes a journey that transcends time, space, and cultural boundaries. This expedition spans several centuries, beginning in 1630 and continuing to the present day. It journeys across 1200 kilometers, meandering through numerous towns and crossing the borders of Germany, Hungary, and Serbia. It also explores the rich tapestry of cultures found within these lands.

Embark on a Family Odyssey of Time, Space, and Cultures

Our story begins nine generations ago with my direct ancestor, Ferdinandus Hasman (1670 - 1728). A native of Waldenburg, Württemberg, Germany, Ferdinandus was a winegrower by profession. His life’s journey ended in Weindorf (Jenő), Hungary. Like many of his contemporaries, the so-called 'Donau Schwaben' migrants, Ferdinandus and his family traded the familiarity of home for the promise of a new life. They navigated the River Danube in small downstream boats, known as 'Ulmer Schachtel,' to claim and cultivate new vineyards in regions that now form parts of Hungary and Serbia.

In the days of a slower, less connected world, every kilometer traveled signified an enormous transformation, often more profound than we can comprehend today. Ferdinandus’ descendants continued his legacy as winegrowers until the devastation of the phylloxera epidemic in the late 19th century wiped out their vineyards. One such descendant, Josephus Gittinger, my eight-generation ancestor, disembarked at Altofen (present-day Óbuda, Budapest). However, other families continued their voyage, extending an additional 300 kilometers to Karlowitz (modern Sremski Karlovci, Serbia). Their journey concluded just meters from the vineyard that produces the wine you hold today.

This region of Europe was once a vibrant mosaic of cultures, where Germans, Serbs, Hungarians, Croats, Tots, Rusins, Romanians, Rutens, and Jews coexisted harmoniously. Our wine encapsulates these journeys across time, space, and cultures, reflecting the complexity and richness of our heritage.

Crafted with Tradition and Respect for Nature

Our wine-making process honors our ancestors' legacy. We embrace simplicity and authenticity, adding nothing and taking nothing away. Our wine is born from organic Kadarka and Merlot grapes, nurtured in a southwest-facing parcel enveloped by pristine nature, shrubs, and woods. Fermentation occurs spontaneously in used oak barrels, resulting in an unfined, unfiltered, and sulphite-free wine.

A limited edition of 4000 bottles has been created, each one a labor of love and meticulous care.

Raise your glasses and join us in a toast to our shared heritage: Zum wohl! Egészségedre! Живели! Enjoy!"

Back in 2011, I had a transformative encounter with low intervention wines that left a lasting impression. The following year, I embarked on a journey to RAW FAIR London, an event that opened my eyes and challenged my perspective. This experience was just the beginning, as I delved into the world of natural wines, attending international fairs, tours, and tastings. In 2018, a dream took hold of me—I envisioned crafting my own wines. Taking action in February 2019, I began pruning my vines, which were previously leased to an organic grower. This marked the start of my very first vintage. After bottling the 2020 harvest, I resolved to establish my own winery. Towards the end of 2020, an astonishing revelation surfaced: a significant portion of my ancestors were winegrowers from Waldenburg, Germany. They had migrated to Óbuda (Alt-Ofen) in the 18th century. It was then that the name for my winery became evident—Gittinger Pince (Winery), paying homage to my family lineage. Gittinger Pince is a small-scale winery nestled near Lake Balaton, specifically on the slopes of Szent György-hegy in Hungary. Our unwavering focus lies in the concept of terroir and a deep respect for nature. Our range of wines includes red wine (sometimes PetNat) made from Pinot Noir. The Pinot Noir vineyard spans 0.5 hectares and has been organically farmed since its establishment in 2001. In 2022, we expanded our vineyards with a 0.5-hectare plantation of Kéknyelű, a unique white autochthonous variety exclusive to our wine region. Furthermore, we craft various batches of sparkling PetNat ciders using organically grown apple varieties. Additionally, we proudly produce a wine from our 2.6-hectare vineyard located in Fruska Gora, Serbia. Working closely with Kadarka, Merlot, Mézes Fehér, and Bakator grape varieties, we carefully craft a unique expression that showcases the distinctive terroir of the region. This endeavor allows us to explore new flavors and expand our winemaking horizons. Within our cellar, we adhere to a philosophy of minimal intervention. Nothing is added, and nothing is taken away. We ferment and age our wines in Tava amphoras, ensuring that each bottle is crafted with immense love and care. So here's to raising a glass—Egészségedre!
