From the Grower
"Fermented in stainless steel with wild vineyard yeast, the wine was bottled under crown seal to finish ferment, resulting in the Petillant Naturel style. The Negroamaro for this wine was sourced from the Sherwood Estate in Loxton North, owned by the Proud family – third generation grape growers who have introduced Southern Italian varieties into their vineyards with great success. Dark pink in the glass with heady bubbles (have that glass ready), the nose leads you into that dark fruit zone – blackberry, boysenberry, with a touch of savoury herb – aniseed, fennel seed. On the mouth though, it’s all broad, mouth puckering acidity, fresh and piercing. Black cherry fruitiness really playing second fiddle to the bright crunch, the slightly bitter saltiness of marjoram/tarragon herb characters providing more length and interest. Just really yum and fun, but with layers of flavour that invite further thought."

Additional Information

Vintage 2023 was the coldest, wettest and trickiest years we’ve faced. Endless rain on the east coast over the last few years came to roost with the Murray River flooding to the second highest levels in recorded history in the Riverland. Persistent rain through Spring and early summer meant not only was harvest delayed by several weeks as fruit ripened slowly, but disease pressures were high with winemaker and grape grower nerves being put to the test. Luckily a healthy vineyard and some warm sunshine in early autumn helped the fruit develop nicely, producing a suite of pretty, more subtle wines this year. Dark pink in the glass with heady bubbles, the nose leads you into that dark fruit zone – blackberry, boysenberry, with a touch of savoury herb – aniseed, fennel seed. something
Delinquente Wine Co makes small batch, minimal intervention wines from Southern Italian grape varieties grown in The Riverland, South Australia. Sourcing fruit from two organically farmed vineyards, my aim is to make wines that focus on drinkability – picking early for low alcohols and high natural acidity, and clean, fresh fruit characters. Having grown up in The Riverland, I want to make wines that shine, and that the region can be proud of. By focusing on Southern Italian varieties such as Vermentino and Nero d’Avola, our wines are not only delicious, but are more sustainable, as these varieties are naturally more heat tolerant and drought resistant than the Burgundy and Bordeaux varieties traditionally planted in the region. More than anything, however, I want to make wines that are true to me, true to the region that they are from, with as little intervention as possible, and that are as enjoyable as possible for those drinking them.
