something
Babaneuri is an ancient village (Akhmeta region), in the foothills of the Greater Caucasus in northern Kakheti. The village nestles in a south-facing valley between two wooded promontories of the Babaneuri Nature Reserve, a forest reserve established for the protection of the rare Caucasian Ironwood Elm (Zelkova Carpinifolia). The southern promontory is crowned by the unusual octagonal 12th century Palace of Queen Tamar; the northern by a 10th century church dedicated to St George. During deep ploughing of the vineyards in 2005 a bronze sword was found and dated to around 2000 BC, proving continuous inhabitation of Babaneuri for at least 4000 years. The Babaneuri terroir consists of gentle slopes of chalky, phosphor-rich clays and loams. Before the Soviet period, the Babaneuri valley was famous for its rich saperavis of broad, varied flavour and deep textured body, and for its light, heady, fruity white wines.
