Additional Information

Alcohol: 10.5% Bottle size:75cl Average age of vines:30 years The 2019 harvest of the red “Fledermaus” (German for “bat”) was small but wonderful. Healthy bunches. The red Fledermaus is made of Schwarzriesling (a German name for Pinot Meunier) growing on shell limestone. All bunches were destemmed by hand. The berries then stayed in boxes for about a week for a round of carbonic maceration before being pressed. The wine finished fermentation in a stainless steel tank and rested on the full lees until it was racked and bottled in July 2020. In 2014 we took over this vineyard from a colleague. There is a neat cottage in the middle of it which just looked like a perfect home for bats. Together with local bat hero Christian Söder we developed the idea of a cycle: we get guano from local bat colonies – a wonderful fertilizer. In the vineyard we have several bat boxes installed to offer opportunities for those lovely animals to hang out. In return we give a share of the revenue back to the bats via the Landesbund für Vogelschutz. The bat on the label is the grey long-eared bat which has become very rare in our area. It’s also incredibly cute and we want to help it stay around.
something
Our urban winery was founded in 1843 in the northern part of Bavaria on the River Main. Since 2012 we have turned it upside down: all of our 6ha are farmed organically and we’ve put a lot of effort in the soil which we understand to be a living being with desires and aversions. Living soil allows for doing less and is home to healthy plants producing the grapes for our wines. Although we don’t add or take away anything grapes don’t become wine by themselves and there are many decisions to make from harvest to bottling. Making these decisions we follow our ideas of a perfect wine while accepting the individuality and personality of each vineyard and wine. We aim to produce lively and energetic wines which come from a healthy soil and benefit from the diversity around them.
