Viticola Mereu was founded in Sorgono, within the Mandrolisai region—a geographical area located in the exact center of Sardinia. For generations, we have been working the land and tending the vines. Our first bottled vintage dates back to the 2015 harvest. We have been winemaking for generations, always holding the respect for the land and the place that hosts us as the core principle of our mission. Avoiding standardization and being free to let the terroir express itself without any winemaking limits or prejudices is our "Resistant" bet! Today, the estate extends over approximately 8 hectares, 3 of which are planted with vines. The vineyards are situated between 450 and 700 meters above sea level. The soils are predominantly composed of decomposed granite. The training system is 90% low bush-trained (alberello). The predominant grape varieties are those of Mandrolisai: Monica, Muristeddu, and Cannonau. However, other grape varieties are present in small percentages, such as Girò, Moscato, Pascale, Lacconargiu, and Nuragus. We also cultivate an experimental section of the vineyard grafted with late-ripening Nebbiolo, Dolcetto, and Chardonnay. Manual pruning, plowing, and manual hoeing around the vine base—following tradition—are our winter operations. We do not irrigate. To protect against pathogens, we exclusively use sulfur- and copper-based products. The harvest is done entirely by hand. Must fermentation occurs using indigenous yeasts derived from the pied de cuve of our own grapes, without temperature control. The reds macerate on the skins for about 8 to 15 days. They then rest for 10 months in a combination of small wooden barrels and stainless steel before being bottled. The rosé spends 12 hours on the skins, followed by gentle pressing with a small basket press, continuing its fermentation in glass carboys (damigiane) and stainless steel. The white, made from Nuragus grapes (along with a few bunches of Lacconargiu), macerates on the skins for 24 hours; after gentle pressing, it ferments in fiberglass and ages in stainless steel. We do not filter or clarify our wines. The use of sulfur dioxide is kept to an absolute minimum. Currently, we do not hold any organic or biodynamic certifications. Our wines are made entirely from 100% estate-grown grapes.
